As a corrosion inhibitor for copper and copper alloys, this product is similar to benzotriazole (BTA), and the actual product also includes 4-methylbenzotriazole ([29878-31-7]) or a mixture of the two, referred to as TTA. Benzotriazole corrosion inhibitors can form insoluble stable complexes with cuprous ions, adsorbed on the metal surface, forming a stable and inert protective film, with a thickness of only 5×10-7cm, but very stable in various media, so that the copper alloy is protected. The corrosion inhibition of BTA is limited in the pH range of 5.5-10, but TTA has a stronger corrosion inhibition effect than BTA in low pH media. Other triazole compounds, such as triazole and naphthotriazole, also have corrosion inhibition effects on copper and copper alloys, but are not as good as BTA and TTA. Methylbenzotriazole is also used in organic synthesis.
