Boron oxide is a colorless glassy crystal or powder. The texture is hard and brittle, and the surface is slippery and odorless. It is thermally stable, and when it is white-hot, it is not reduced by carbon, but alkali metals, magnesium and aluminum can be reduced to boron monomer. At around 600°C, it becomes a very viscous liquid. Boric anhydride can absorb water very strongly in the air and form boric acid. Soluble in acid, ethanol, hot water, slightly soluble in cold water. Boron oxide can be combined with several metal oxides to form boron glass with characteristic colors. It is completely miscible with alkali metals, copper, silver, lead, arsenic, antimony, bismuth oxides. The density of crystalline boron oxide is 2.46g/cm3, the density of amorphous boron oxide is 1.80~1.84g/cm3, the melting point is 557 °C, the solubility (g/100gH2O) is 1.1 (0 °C), 15.7 (100 °C) is very easy to absorb water, and it becomes turbid after moisture absorption, and it can also be soluble in alcohol. At lower temperatures, boron oxide crystals can be obtained by dehydration of H3BO3. The crystal contains BO4 tetrahedral building blocks with a density of 1.805g·cm-3 and a melting point of 450°C. The density of glassy boron oxide is 1.795g·cm-3, which gradually softens when the temperature increases, and becomes liquid when it reaches the red hot high temperature, with a boiling point of 1500 °C. Boron is also directly combined with oxygen to give B2O3.
