Description
LOST CIRCULATION MATERIAL
Lost circulation materials (LCM) are used in the mitigation and
remediation of seepage, partial, or complete loss of drilling fluid from
the hole into the formation. (reference wellbore stability)
EMULSIFIERS/WETTING AGENT
In non-aqueous drilling fluids, emulsifiers form a stable water-in-oil
emulsion. Wetting agents oil-wet drill solids and weighting agents,
thereby preventing these solids from water-wetting, which risks system
stability.
FLUID LOSS CONTROL ADDITIVES
By promoting the formation of a strong, thin filter cake, fluid loss control
additives, also known as filtration control agents, protect the formation
from filtrate invasion and reduce the
potential for differential sticking.
LUBRICANTS/ROP ENHANCERS
By reducing friction between the drillstring and the formation or casing,
lubricants and rate of penetration (ROP) enhancers minimize torque
and drag, thereby reducing tool wear and enhancing transmission of
weight and energy to the bit. The enhanced weight and energy
increases the drilling rate. CORROSION INHIBITORS
SHALE INHIBITORS
Through various shale inhibition mechanisms, including polyol
chemistry, the emulsified phase, supplemental salinity, silicates, and
amines, shale inhibitors minimize water’s ability to hydrate clay, gumbo
and reactive shales. Hydration causes swelling, wellbore instability,
high torque and drag, and stuck pipe.
WEIGHTING AGENT
Weighting agents, such as barite and hematite, are high-density
minerals. When suspended in the fluid, weighting agents provide
hydrostatic pressure to equalize downhole pressures.
VISCOSIFIERS/RHEOLOGY
MODIFIERS
Viscosifiers and rheology modifiers control the flow properties of the
drilling fluid. Properly treated fluids suspend the weighting agents and
drill solids while giving the fluid a rheological profile that optimizes holecleaning
and penetration rates.
CONDITIONERS/THINERS
Conditioners and thinners alter properties of the fluid, stabilize the fluid
or counteract the effect of contaminants and drill solids SPOTTING FLUIDS
By equaling pressures or breaking the filter cake, spotting fluids free
differentially stuck pipe.
DEFOAMERS
By reducing the surface tension between water and air, defoamers
control surface foaming and minimize foam formation
