Propylparaben is an organic compound with the molecular formula C10H12O3. Colorless small crystals or white powder. Virtually insoluble in cold water. Tasteless with a slight astringency. In the presence of sulfuric acid, paraben and n-propanol are esterified, then neutralized, washed, spun dry and refined to obtain the final product. It is mainly used as a preservative in food, cosmetics, feed, etc. When used in combination with ethylparaben, it can improve corrosion resistance and solubility.
It has a wide range of antimicrobial effects against fungi, yeasts and bacteria, and its antimicrobial effect is greater than that of ethylparaben. It is used as a food preservative in the production of soy sauce and kimchi.
Cosmetic preservatives. It belongs to phenolic preservatives. Add 0.1%-1.0%. It is usually used in combination with butylparaben for good additive and synergistic properties.
