NMP is used to recover the recovery of certain hydrocarbons produced during the production of petrochemical products, such as 1,3-butadiene and acetylene. Used to absorb hydrogen sulfide from sulfur-containing gases and hydrodesulfurization devices.
Due to its good solvency, NMP is used to dissolve a variety of polymers. It is also used as a solvent or paint stripping agent for surface treatment of textiles, resins and metal coated plastics.
In the industrial preparation of polyphenylene sulfide, it is used as a solvent.
In the pharmaceutical industry, N-methyl -2-pyrrolidone is used in the formulation of drugs through both oral and percutaneous administration. It is also heavily used in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries as solvents for electrode preparation, although there are many efforts to replace them with less environmentally related solvents, such as water.
